Four New Awards

LoneStart is pleased to announce it has received four World Wide Web Health awards from the Health Information Resource Center in the spring/summer 2008 competition. The World Wide Web Health Awards is a program that recognizes the best Web-based health-related content for consumers and professionals. The program is held twice a year, spring/summer and fall/winter, with the goal of providing a "seal of quality" for electronic health information. A panel of international health information and Internet experts judge entries based on accuracy, success in reaching the targeted audience and overall quality.

The World Wide Web Health Awards is organized by the Health Information Resource Center (HIRC), a national clearinghouse for consumer health information programs and materials. The Web-based health awards are an extension of the HIRC's 15-year old National Health Information Awards (NHIA), the largest program of its kind in the United States. There were nearly 1,000 entries in this year's National Health Information Awards from hundreds of organizations.

Other award winners include: Aetna, Blue Cross/ Blue Shield, Humana, Mayo Clinic, Merck, National Institutes of Health, NIDDKD, Texas Heart Institute and WebMD.

teamwork
Wellness Isn't An Isolated Goal

It's no secret that companies today are looking for ways to manage healthcare costs, and are willing to invest in programs that will help meet those goals.

But-and this is a big one-employees tend to value health and wellness initiatives and offerings more when they are rewarded and recognized for their overall performance in the workplace. If yours' is an organization where employees see few rewards or opportunities in general, messages about how much "employers care about their wellness and health" will likely seem insincere.

So, the question becomes, in a broad sense, "how do you do both effectively?

In part, the answer comes from how wellness programs are presented, and perceived, and how well the skills and motivational elements attributed to human capital value are included as wellness program components-such as teamwork and team-building. Team-building exercises have long been a part of management training, but are almost non-existent for most employees. (LoneStart's "Team Esteem Challenge" successfully utilizes a teamwork model for all of an organization's participants in the structure of its Wellness Strategy.)

We've identified four key elements that must be present for a wellness program to be effective-while building skills and improving motivation at the same time, thereby addressing an employee's value to the organization.

  • It has to matter. Opportunities have to be significant and real. When wellness incentives are aligned with company goals and values, employees are more motivated to succeed. At the same time, employees who recognize and experience tangible rewards for health and wellness-related achievements, will value their overall daily attendance and performance more.
  • Success has to be possible. Believe it or not, there are some work settings and policies that without intending to, actually discourage work-life balance or healthy choices. If employees don't see any real opportunity and there's no motivation to improve health and wellness, then whatever programs you offer are doomed to fail. Offering programs in an environment that undermines growth and opportunity makes no sense.
  • The strategy being proposed must be relevant. If participants perceive it won't work within the context of their lives, they won't participate. The most successful employee wellness initiatives minimize this perceived barrier to participation.
  • The initiative has to "belong" to the employees. By creating an environment that values health and wellness, employees should be encouraged to "make wellness theirs'." Over time, this sense of ownership becomes as important as the other aspects of a productive, fully-engaged work force.

There are too many expensive, ineffective and underutilized programs that focus on correcting employees' unhealthy behavior when other-employer-caused-problems loom. It might seem contradictory, but it's not really, to say that true wellness must start with valuing people, rather than focusing only on correcting their lifestyle choices
DJS
Two Years Later

Organizations often ask us, "What do we do after the LoneStart Challenge ends?" We say, "Keep it going," and here's how one organization does just that.

Exactly two years ago, DJS International Inc. had the distinction of becoming the first LoneStart corporate client. And, what a successful client they have been! From 100 percent employee participation in the 63-Day LoneStart Team Esteem Challenge, to employees who have stayed motivated and continue to create their own challenges, to moving toward employee wellness as a corporate value - and this year, to achieving a "flat" insurance renewal. In other words, no increase on medical insurance premiums.

Melissa Sekin Meyer with DJS International Services says the company has always felt strongly that it should provide full medical coverage for its employees, yet as insurance costs continued to escalate with double-digit increases every year, they knew those costs couldn't continue to be absorbed. She says those costs were partly influenced by the company's poor claims experience, something that could be addressed through an effective wellness initiative. "We looked at health and wellness programs and LoneStart seemed to be the most positive and meaningful way to encourage real change that benefitted not just our corporate insurance costs, but actual employee health and quality of life. It was a win-win."

Since their initial success, DJS employees have initiated a series of what they call "LoneStart Revivals." It's their own version of a team challenge, but with twists and parameters that meet specific employee-defined needs and goals. "We're having fun with wellness, and it's great to watch it become a part of our corporate culture," says Meyer.

The company now puts out its own wellness newsletter to support employee efforts, and highlights "national awareness months," such as Cholesterol Awareness and Breast Cancer Awareness with the Komen Race for the Cure. Meyer says the continued support she receives from LoneStart in the way of newsletters, customized posters and personal communication works as an important reminder to her to continue in her efforts in developing the company's culture of wellness, keeping it in the structure of their corporate goals.

Meyer points out that the change in employee health is reflected in weight loss, smoking cessation, increased commitment to physical activity and a general greater acknowledgement of the importance of wellness as a way of life. She says the greatest single objective measurement to date is the flat renewal - no increase - on medical insurance premiums this year. "This is almost unheard of in a group of our size, and we are absolutely thrilled!"

Meyer says the long-term successes of some of the most "changed" employees is motivating to other employees. "The success of a few matters a lot, and encourages those who weren't previously successful to give it another try. It's really great to see that."

Must Be The Season Of The Witch

The Halloween candy is on the grocery shelves (and maybe already sitting in bowls or stashed away in desk drawers around the workplace).
