Our National Wellness Deficit    

   

As you might imagine, here at LoneStart Wellness we tend to view a large part of the social, economic, political and cultural issues currently open for debate in terms of, well, wellness.

 

But is that necessarily a bad thing?  Could it be that we're right to focus on wellness (or lack thereof) as a significant driver of so many of the issues we're struggling with today?  Let's look at just four of the financial issues currently in the headlines:

 

The Budget Deficit   We're going to spend about $2.5 trillion for health care this year and that now represents about17.3 percent of our Gross National Product.  About 60 percent of our health care expenditures are due to preventable chronic illnesses. 

 

The Future of Medicare   (Lately being referred to as "MediScare" because politicians are afraid to face up to its pending insolvency.)  By improving three daily behaviors -  smoking, poor nutrition and physical inactivity, over time we would take about 75 percent of the current Medicare burden out of the equation.   

 

Unemployment   Escalating employee health care costs are keeping many employers from hiring additional employees.

 

Family Finances   Because health care costs are increasing far greater than the current rate of inflation, it is now estimated that by 2017 the average American family can expect to spend at least 20 percent of its gross income on health care.

 

And the fact is that our individual and collective wellness behaviors are having a profound impact on more than our financial well-being. Childhood obesity, type 2 diabetes, our inability to manage stress, our dependency on medications, and sleep-deprivation now characterize our collective condition. All are largely the result of our daily wellness choices.

 

So what's the take-away here? The good news is that we 300-plus million Americans are in charge of our own destiny.  Our future is up to us. The bad news is that we just don't realize it yet.


Creating a Culture of Wellness

Wellness Fatigue 

Does Your Organization Have Wellness Fatigue?   

 

If so, it's probably justified. The vast majority of all wellness programs consistently under-perform.
 

 From the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (otherwise known as Health Care Reform), to your benefits provider, to requests from your employees, to your understanding that the need is real and timely, and all the way down the chain to the information you receive on a regular basis from organizations offering the next brightest and best answer to wellness (we're excluding ourselves from this group for right now), the need for a sustainable wellness solution routinely dogs you. And, there's a very good reason why.

 

If you feel bombarded by conflicting wellness messages, and are frustrated in your efforts to make the right choice, let us offer a few questions that we hope will make the process a smoother one.

 

1. If you've tried a wellness program before, was it successful? Did it engage at least 65 percent of your employees? If the answer is yes, the next question is, what made it work? If the answer is no, the next question is why didn't it work?

 

2. Are you looking for something more than the many inert on-line programs, where your employees fill-out forms, log-in with privileged access to wellness topics and then passively answer wellness questions?

 

3. Are you looking for a program that actively engages your employees in a hands-on / high-touch process?

 

4. Are you looking for a long-term, sustainable program that reflects your organization's values?

 

5. Are you looking for nuts and bolts or bells and whistles?

 

6. Does the program you're considering focus on processes or outcomes?

 

7. Does the program you're considering engage your high risk employees or does it appeal mostly to those employees who have already embraced wellness?

 

We know having too many choices is not necessarily a good thing . . . it can in fact be numbing. With so many wellness choices it's easy to just set wellness aside rather than decide on one program over another. That's what fatigue does -- you find yourself just too tired of it all to even think about it. And, that's not a good answer for any of us.

The Gloves Come Off . . . Packaging vs. Nutrition

We used this information in a recent Blog post on our Wellness & Well-being Blog (click the Follow button on the Blog to stay up to date with our thoughts). Please share it with your employees. We think the information is well-worth distributing.      

 

The next time you're wandering the aisles at the supermarket spend a little time looking at labels and packaging. Then look at the label on the back (or side). If the packaging touts "reduced fat" you'll probably find it's higher in sugar, or high fructose corn syrup and sodium. If it has added fiber, you'll probably find it isn't natural fiber. The label won't tell you, but the list of ingredients will -- and if you can't pronounce it and if  it sounds like a chemical, it probably is. Hmm . . .

 

Statistics tell us that two of every three Americans are overweight or obese, yet a recent Consumer Reports study found that nine out of 10 Americans think they eat healthfully. In fact 90 percent described their diet as "somewhat," "very," or "extremely" healthy.  Hmm . . .

 

Are you aware of the nutritional value in the foods you choose to eat? Are you familiar with what healthy choice, 100% natural, whole grain, good source of fiber, reduced fat, fat-free, low-fat (and the list goes on) really means?  Do you know soft drinks are low-fat?  Hmm . . .

 

And, what about all those foods that promise to help your heart, lower your cholesterol, trim your waistline? These foods with health benefit claims actually have a name-functional food. Well, guess what -- all of these functional foods are more about marketing than nutrition.Hmm . . .

 

The Nutrition Business Journal says sales of those "functional" foods alleging to fix what's wrong with us totaled $37.3 billion in 2009, up from $28.2 billion in 2005. That's up 32.3 percent in just four years. It looks like a lot of us are buying-in to those "healthy" packaging claims. Yet we're spending $150 billion a year paying for health problems related to obesity. What do you think would happen to our overall health if more of us started comparing labels and ingredients against the product sales pitch on our food choices?  Hmm . . .
