Today's Employee Wellness Challenge

Tick tock. Tick tock.

The health care crisis continues to cost employers more with each passing day.

  • Employee Wellness Programs are no longer a perk. They are a necessity.
  • Annual medical expenses for employees range from $114 for normal-weight individuals to $574 for overweight individuals to $620 for obese individuals.
  • More than 9 percent of our nation's health-care expenditures, about $117 billion, and 300,000 deaths annually are directly related to obesity and lack of physical activity. (Center for Disease Control)
  • A well-planned and implemented Employee Wellness Program will yield a 3-to-1 to 10-to-1 ROI.

The Snooze Button

And yet, for many organizations, employee wellness remains on the "back burner." Why? Probably because of the following misconceptions about many employee wellness programs:

  • Misconception No. 1: An Employee Wellness Program will be an administrative burden.
  • Misconception No. 2: The real and perceived time commitment by employees will result in a low rate of participation.
  • Misconception No. 3: The program will only appeal to employees who don't need it because they're already healthy.
  • Misconcpetion No. 4: It will be burdensome, intrusive and expensive.
  • Misconcpetion No. 5: It won't work.

So, What's Next? A Rude Alarm or a Soothing Wake-up Call?

We don't need to describe the rude alarm to you. If it hasn't gone off already, it's about to. But, it's also avoidable if you take this wake-up call and consider an Employee Wellness Initiative that is:

  • An inexpensive investment in your most important resource with a high ROI.
  • Private and non-invasive.
  • Virtually turn-key with minimal administration by your staff.
  • High-impact.
  • Science-based.
  • Stand-alone or works in conjunction with existing programs.
  • Proven.

The LoneStart Solution

The LoneStart 21-Day Wellness Initiative is a 21-day jumpstart program that addresses the psychology of behavior change and is based on the premise that we must each take ownership of our personal health and wellness decisions and direction. It is an inexpensive, effective, easy to implement initiative that works as a stand-alone program or as a high-impact addition to existing employee wellness strategies.

We know that the key to managing the issue of employee wellness is to be proactive. We ask our prospective clients to consider the following questions:
  1. What will happen and how much will it cost you if you do not invest in wellness?
  2. What programs do you currently have, and are they working?
  3. What programs would meet more of the needs of your employees?
  4. Why are you willing to invest in wellness, and what outcomes are you hoping for?
  5. What can you realistically afford to invest?

The LoneStart 21-Day Wellness Initiative was developed as a direct response to the fact that most wellness initiatives (personal and organizational) fail for two reasons. First, participants don't have the fundamental belief that the strategy being promoted is valid. (They haven't made the necessary psychological buy-in.) The second, and more important reason is that they don't have confidence in their own ability to regain control of their personal health and wellness.

LoneStart is a science-based strategy that is grounded in established principles of social psychology and social psychophysiology. As such, it is designed to enable participants to recognize their personal motivational triggers, challenge themselves during an achievable three-week time frame, build on their successes and develop the confidence through day-to-day and even moment-by-moment choices that they can achieve even more. We call it "Achieve and Believe."

The LoneStart 21-Day Wellness Initiative is meeting a real need for a number of rural and community hospitals in Texas. "As health care providers, our work is centered around the needs and welfare of our patients and their families," says Scott Nail, administrator of Hardeman County Memorial Hospital in Quannah, Texas. "As caregivers we sometimes neglect to care for ourselves. We realize that if we are going to fulfill our mission, we need to take care of and protect our most important resource, our employees and staff." Hardeman County Memorial Hospital will introduce the LoneStart Challenge to its employees on June 29th.

Like any other employer, hospitals are dealing with ever-escalating health care costs and their effect on the corporate bottom line. A well-conceived and implemented employee wellness initiative will reduce health care costs and absenteeism while improving employee morale and productivity. But other benefits accrue as well. The hospital demonstrates that it has taken a proactive position regarding the health of its employees, their families and their community. It therefore fulfills a mandate, builds brand equity and goodwill, meets an urgent need and reinforces its position as the primary wellness resource in its service area.

LoneStart maintains that hospitals represent an ideal opportunity to create momentum for community outreach wellness initiatives, increase awareness of the important issues of obesity and inactivity, and to promote an honest, realistic and achievable solution.

On July 13th, Jay Seifert, one of the co-founders of LoneStart will explore these multiple benefits during a presentation at the Northwest Texas Hospital Association's Annual Convention in Abilene, Texas. Contact us if you would like an outline of that presentation.

With some intense competition between the top teams and remarkable individual performances, the Nocona General Hospital / LoneStart Employee Wellness Challenge concluded on May 1st, 2006.

"Well over 50 percent of our full time employees participated in this 15-week challenge and every team either maintained or improved their BMI average score," says Corrie Kirkendall, RN and Wellness Center Director for Nocona General Hospital. The winning team reduced its average BMI by 3.3 points to win the $1,500 cash price. The runner-up team followed closely with an average loss of 3.24 points.

Kirkendall pionts out that there were some truly remarkable individual performances, with one person imporving her BMI by 6.6 points. Several participants moved from the Obese to Overweight or from Overweight to Healthy BMI categories. "In a very real sense, everyone at Nocona General is a winner. As an organization, we have a heightened awareness of the costs and consequences of poor nutritional choices and inactivity. More importantly, we have demonstrated that each of us has the ability to take charge of our own health and wellness."

If your organization is willing to take responsibility for promoting healthy lifestyles and a healthy work environment, LoneStart is an effective, low-cost and easy-to-administer employee wellness program, which functions equally well as a stand-alone initiative or as a high-impact jump-start to existing or proposed employee wellness strategies.
